Frida: A Self Portrait Fairfax Theatre reviews
Late For The Door!!!!
"I used to be a big fan of Frida: A Self-Portrait until I attended this whatever the hell that was. I'll preface this by saying, "Simply put, I was outraged that he didn't bother bringing a band to this so-called concert." The entire setting had the feel of karaoke night at the local watering hole, complete with rhythm-challenged, overloaded drunks who wouldn't have noticed if he'd shown up with bagpipes. Call me old-fashioned, but when attending a concert, I expect to see and hear musicians, not a guy with a laptop and keyboard. There was another guy playing the guitar or attempting to play, the only thing I remember about him is the bad haircut. After watching some excellent live performances on YouTube (where he had a full band by the way), my hopes were high until the lights came on. Another curious aspect was his insistence on performing other artists' material when he has such a voluminous collection of his own music to draw from. I found his vocals rich and enthusiastic, but without a band behind him to accentuate the melodies and soulful tides, the whole thing felt empty without substance. It was like watching him karaoke his own material, which was just sad."
